Wayne Rooney Aiming To Better Last Season’s Goal Haul For Manchester United

For the second time in his career, Manchester United's stocky striker Wayne Rooney broke the 20-goal mark in a single season, and the English forward - who has been earmarked to play in more of a central role this coming campaign - has targeted the feat once again.

The 23-year-old will be under the spotlight this term, as the goalscoring burden will fall on the shoulders of a new attacking trident, with Rooney being one of the focal forwards.

Creative striker Dimitar Berbatov and goal poacher Michael Owen - acquired this summer on a free transfer - constitute the other two attackers in the new-look offence. United lost Carlos Tevez and Cristiano Ronaldo, who were responsible for over a century of goals in the past two seasons, in the summer transfer window.

"I have always said I would like to score more goals than the previous season so that is what I am aiming for again this time," he explained to the club's official website. "If I can do that I will be really happy.

"I am pretty relaxed about things. There are a lot of great players in our team and we know if we all work together then we are capable of achieving great things."

United have been in a relentless free-flowing and productive form during pre-season, beating Chinese opposition Hangzhou Greentown by a one-sided 8-2 scoreline.

Rooney, though, failed to get himself on the scoresheet.
