Owen Hargreaves could be out of action until Christmas, fear Manchester United

Owen Hargreaves could be ruled out until Christmas after suffering another setback in his recovery from knee surgery.

The Manchester United midfielder, who had operations on both knees last September to cure a tendinitis problem, was due to join up with his team-mates in Munich to continue his rehabilitation.

But a complication has forced Hargreaves, 28, to stay in Colorado under the eye of renowned knee surgeon Dr Richard Steadman.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson originally said a "conservative estimate would be September" for his return.

But there is a fear it could be autumn before he is anywhere near a first-team comeback, while doubts remain whether he will ever make a full recovery.

Speaking in Munich before United’s opening game in the Audi Cup, Fergie said: "Hargreaves won’t be playing because he’s still recuperating in America.

"We hoped he’d be joining us here but we can’t rush him. He’s had a major operation on both knees and that’s a serious business. He won’t be rushed back and he’s young enough for us not to need to do that."
