Dimitar Berbatov: I will score more and more for Manchester United

Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov has vowed to do much better in his second season at Manchester United and "score more and more and more". The Bulgarian feels that he has plenty more to offer to the club and fans and that he will be "determined to do better and improve on his tally last season," the club's website said.

Berbatov scored 14 goals for United in all competitions following his drawn-out transfer from Tottenham last summer and many supporters felt he was a waste of resources as the club's record signing, having cost 30.75 million pounds on summer transfer season deadline day.

The United website claimed that Berbatov "helped the Reds to Club World Cup, Carling Cup and Barclays Premier League glory".

He did have a few tame displays and some controversial games. When he failed to make the starting line-up at the Champions League final in Rome, some supporters felt that Berbatov might be offloaded as quickly as he had been brought to Old Trafford in the first place. There was also media speculation about Spanish, German and Italian clubs were interested in signing the Bulgarian.

Whatever Alex Ferguson had in store for the striker, after the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez the United manager is a little short on options. Wayne Rooney himself has said that he expects Berbatov to contribute more next season. Regardless of media speculation, the fact is that Berbatov will be under even more pressure in this campaign. The fans and manager need to be persuaded beyond any doubt that Berbatov is indeed worth his price tag.

"I think I can do better this season, I think I can do more. That's why I am happy to be on the pre-season tour. It is always beneficial to start well and have a good pre-season and I feel I am training well at the moment. I am here to score goals and I hope to score more and more for United this season," Berbatov told the club's cable channel MUTV.
